No Summer Slump Here!
Summer is a time for backyard BBQ, more time with family and friends, and trips to the pool. It’s also time for a break from school for a million kids across Tennessee and the thousands of educators who serve them. But this summer at the Tennessee Federation for Children we are busy working to ensure access to high-quality educational settings for all students. That means we are educating parents about their school options and we’re advocating for laws that grant more meaningful choices.
Last month, the Tennessee General Assembly closed its session without passing legislation would have expanded eligibility in the Individualized Education Accounts program to all students with special needs. While I was disappointed the the bill, which was sponsored by Sen. Gresham and Rep. Moody, didn’t pass, I have been encouraged by the energy around the state for parental choice. In fact, recent polling shows that a majority of Tennesseans, regardless of party, race, and geography, support giving parents meaningful school choices.
One way to give parents more choice is by passing the right laws at the state level. This year there are over 300 people running for the state House or Senate. You can’t meet them all but I’d encourage you contact those in your area and ask how they will fight for educational access if elected. In the meantime, I hope your summer is off to a great start and that you enjoy the updates in this newsletter.
