Statement from John Patton on 2020-2021 TCAP Results

August 3, 2021

NASHVILLE – American Federation for Children’s Tennessee State Director, John Patton, released the following statement in response to the announcement of the recent TCAP assessment results:

“These TCAP assessment numbers demonstrate that we must take seriously the effect prolonged school closures and continuous disruption had on Tennessee students. Families, educators, and students faced unimaginable challenges, and they deserve the tools and support needed to close these learning gaps. Ensuring that kids are learning and improving these scores will require innovative approaches.

“We also applaud Speaker Sexton’s suggestion to provide parents access to a school choice program if their school district closes and opts for virtual school. AFC-TN believes parents should be able to choose the educational option that is best for their family.”
